Vodka has overtaken blended Scotch to become the UK’s favourite spirit, figures show.

For generations, whiskies such as Bell's and Teacher's, were the most popular tipple. Now vodkas, including Smirnoff, Absolut and Polish brands such as Wyborowa, have claimed the title.

Figures published in Off Licence News show that £747 million was spent on vodka in shops, supermarkets and off-licences in the 12 months to April, a rise of 11 per cent in one year. Sales of blended Scotch increased by 1 per cent to £742 million.

Although total whisky sales, including expensive single malts, still out perform vodka with £872 million spent last year, experts predict that vodka will take the top spot by the end of the year.

In bars, vodka has long been the best-selling spirit. Analysts said that it was benefiting from a cool image, while whisky was seen as a "stuffy old man" drink.

The country's Polish population is also raising sales. Figures show that about 230,000 Poles registered to work in Britain between May 2004 and March 2006.

Rosie Davenport, of Off Licence News, says: "This is a landmark moment for one of our most treasured national drinks. While Scotch has lots of heritage, which has propelled sales overseas, at home it's had a tough time appealing to a younger audience."
