Government launches new alcohol awareness campaign Print

The Department of Health has launched a £10 million advertising campaign to tackle binge drinking.

The ads, which include TV, billboard, radio and press, show the exact unit content in individual drinks and warn of the health risks excessive drinking can pose.

These ads show close-ups of drinks including lager, wine and Guinness as well as different measures, including large and small glasses and full bottles of wine.

The Know Your Limits campaign has been launched following research by YouGov that showed that that 77% of drinkers did not know how many units there were in a typical large glass of wine.

More than half (55%) thought a large glass of wine would contain two units, when it actually contains three.

Derek Lewis, chair of the Drinkaware Trust, says: "We welcome the Government's new campaign to make people more drink aware. It's important that everyone knows about responsible drinking. As the leading independent authority on responsible drinking, Drinkaware looks forward to continued close working with Government as we seek to increase awareness of alcohol and its effects."

The recommended daily alcohol allowance for women is two to three units, and for men it is three to four.
