Anti-binge schemes 'fuel culture of drunkenness' Print

The Government's attempts to clamp down on binge drinking are fuelling an "intoxication culture" among teenagers, says a leading academic.

Public health messages warning of the dangers of alcohol are increasingly backfiring as young people perceive drunkenness – and even drink-related injuries – as a "badge of honour", claims Dr Andrew Bengry-Howell, a researcher from Bath University.

Some teenagers are distributing mobile phone footage of friends having their stomachs pumped. Others boast of injuries because they perceive themselves as "minor celebrities".

Dr Bengry-Howell says ministers should acknowledge that people drink – and focus campaigns on responsible consumption rather than associated risks.
